Biography
After a 40 year hiatus, I returned to beekeeping in 2021. What began as a hobby quickly grew into a Commercial Apiary focused on raising and selling quality Queens and NUCs to local beekeepers. I raise open mated Varroa Sensitive Hygiene (VSH) queens for sale individually and in NUCs. My VSH breeder queens are artificially inseminated offspring from queens and drones exhibiting demonstrated varroa resistance by VP Queen Bees in Iva, SC. Check out my website for more detailed information on our VSH breeders.
I currently manage ~100 Hives for Honey production and another 60 or so (depending on the time of year) for queen rearing and NUC production. I also move ~72 hives to north Georgia each summer to harvest some of the sourwood honey flow. To make moving the bees more efficient for my one man operation, I developed a 2 hive pallet that makes moving hives on/off our transport trailer with an electric hand truck relatively easy.
In 2023, my wife Angie and I, in partnership with our wonderful city library established the Commerce Beekeepers Club. We meet at the Commerce Public Library the first Thursday evening monthly. In Spring 2024, I designed, built, installed, and continue to manage the Club's Observation Hive. It is prominently located on the front of the library and can be observed from inside, where there is an area dedicated to showcasing the hive and our favorite pollinator.
